On an overcast morning the Wetherby First and Second teams met in the opening game of the Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League Level 2 Division 5.
Both sides had suffered relegation last term but were looking to bounce back this season. The men’s team tennis trials have been well supported during the off season with over 30 gentlemen expressing an interest to play in the three teams we run. With the captains therefore able to pick from strength the club is hoping to make a sustained bid for success this campaign.
As can often be the case in many sports, the final winning score line of 9.5 v 2.5 to Wetherby 1 may have been slightly flattering but a final points tally of 62-46 doesn’t lie and it confirmed that team selection had been proved correct .
Roger Fawcus who has replaced Mike Butterworth as captain of Wetherby 1 this year, led superbly from the front and along with playing partner Jez Reddish won all three rubbers dropping just 11 games.
Captain of Wetherby 2 Mike Park fought valiantly all morning playing with Son Ollie, and the Park men were rewarded for some good tennis with a convincing 9-3 win over Rob Payne and Paul Godden.
Wetherby 1 are the early table toppers and have a week off before hosting Sheriff Hutton at Castlegarth on May 8.
Well done to all players and fingers crossed both sides can have a rewarding summer.
