The eagerly awaited top of the table clash between Fulford and Wetherby Ladies Second Team took place this morning and in a dramatic match it more than lived up to pre game expectations. Dubbed an early title clash, unbeaten Fulford led second placed Wetherby by two points so it was vital our girls avoided defeat.
Captain Rachel Butterworth partnered Marise Richfield but found the going much tougher than usual as the early pace setters in Division Three showed why they have a one hundred percent record. The Wetherby duo still secured two narrow 7-5 wins and were pipped 7-5 in the another to obtain nineteen points on the morning.
Trish Bell and Jill Abel combined and in two very keenly contested rubbers drew both 6-6.They showed a touch of class in winning 9-3 in the other and the twenty one points they earnt proved to be the top score of the morning.
Louise Williams and Debbie Vines were involved in the most drama however with the injury gods certainly not smiling on the pair. Having just overcome an elbow injury which has disrupted the early part of her campaign,Vines took a nasty fall early in preceding’s which shook her and she did extremely well to battle on showing great commitment. Partner Williams also suffered a calf muscle problem which severely hindered her movement and meant the Wetherby girls literally limped over the line. However despite two defeats they also managed a draw and still took 14 points which ultimately ensured the sides played out a 54-54 draw!!!
It was a fair scoreline after some tremendous tennis but Wetherby will feel but for the injury curse they would have taken the spoils and gone home with maximum points. It does however show that the team have the quality to compete with the best in the section and they will be ready for the return on home soil which will give them another chance to close the gap on the leaders. That remains at two points although Wetherby face another stern test at Copmanthorpe next Saturday who were sitting in third prior to the weekend action.
This looks a division which will provide plenty of twists and turns and we await with interest how the promotion battle unfolds.
Well done to our ladies today and best wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured.
