The annual Harrogate Tennis League Tournament takes place this week.
Lucy Wright and Mike Triffitt were the Wetherby Clubs sole representatives.
The duo, who played in the restricted mixed event last term, were forced to enter the Open event this time after Wright was elevated to the Wetherby mixed first team.
The standard was therefore much higher but on a muggy evening the couple fought gallantly before losing 6-3,6-4 to Matt Waters and Sue Bowden who play in the Academy second team which compete alongside Wetherby in Division Two. Waters and Bowden had won the Restricted Open Mixed Doubles in 2015 .The Wetherby pair held a 3-0 lead in the second set but were unable to hang on as Waters in particular raised his game to see the Harrogate based couple through to the quarter final. Triffitt who normally plies his trade in Division Five was certainly not inconvenienced by the step up in class but mistakes have a tendency to be punished at this level and the general standard is far more competitive and consistent.
Wright served extremely well and was unfazed by the constant barrage of attacks that Waters reined down on her and she showed why she remains an important member of the Wetherby team.
Well done to both for flying the Wetherby banner in this prestige event.
The competition continues this week with finals day held this Saturday at Harrogate Racquets tennis club.
