The Wetherby Ladies Third Team are having a fine season and after a draw and a win recently now find themselves sitting proudly at the top of the table.
They made the trip to third placed Whitkirk and in a battle royal were pleased to come away with the draw and a useful point.
Captain Bev Lyn partnered Katie Barrett and the Wetherby duo proved too strong for the home first pair winning 6-2,6-3.
However the Leeds based outfits second couple proved more than useful and they lost the opener 6-2. This only resulted in our girls upping their game and they responded in splendid style dishing out a 6-0 whitewash to level the rubber and share the spoils.
Ann Jones and Cathryn Keighley joined forces and they too found the home second couple a real handful and found themselves on the wrong side of a 6-1,6-1 drubbing. But the ladies regrouped and battled back to earn a point in their second rubber with a 6-4,1-6 success.
This obviously meant the match was drawn which was a fair reflection of proceedings on the evening.
Back on home soil a few days later the team entertained another side towards the summit when Almscliffe where the visitors to Castlegarth.
Anne Lilleywhite returned to partner Bev Lyn and after a slow start which saw them concede the first set 6-3, they came out all guns firing in the second to secure an impressive 6-1 win to take a draw.
They continued this fine form with a 6-4,6-1 win in their next game for a solid evening’s work.
However Cathryn Keighley and Ann Jones were to eclipse their efforts as the duo won both their games. The first was particularly hard fought with a tie break 7-5 opening set followed by a close 6-3 victory. The tightness of their matches continued but they came through 6-4,6-4 in the second rubber for maximum returns and an overall Wetherby win of 7-1 against the side in second place in the section.
So whisper it gently but perhaps promotion is a realistic target this campaign despite it been early days.
The team have a short break now and return to action with a home game against Alwoodley on Friday June 24.
Well done to all and good luck with that promotion push!
