The Wetherby men’s first team sit proudly top of Level 2 Division 5 in the York Tennis League and they put their unbeaten record on the line this morning when Cliffe were the visitors to Castlegarth. Cliffe were looking for a quick fire double over Wetherby after beating the second team last week but soon realised they were taking a significant step up in class today.
Jez Reddish and Dave Corban were in irresistible form as they dished out 10-2 and 11-1 thrashings in two fine wins before settling for a 6-6 draw with an above average Cliffe first pair to finish with a points tally of 27 on the morning.
James Landau and Nigel Williams were not far behind and played some sublime tennis too. Wins of 10-2 and 9-3 were recorded before they too were forced to share the spoils with the same cliffe men. The duo finished with 25 points.
Steve Jones looked to be feeling the effects of the night before when he attended the clubs wine tasting event and along with Paul Godden the couple were beaten 9-3 by Cliffe seed one. However they wiped away the cobwebs to bounce back with a 10-2 and 7-5 win to finish on a more than respectable 20 points.
So Wetherby made it five wins from five in handing out a 10-2 thrashing by 72-36.
The squad is extremely strong this term and even when key personnel are absent there is significant strength in depth to step in and cover without weakening the match day six.
Is the champagne on ice?!. Maybe a little premature but it will certainly need a good side to stop the Wetherby juggernaut this term!
Well done chaps and good luck with the title charge. Only the champions are promoted this season so there can be no let up in the weekly efforts if the ultimate goal is to be achieved.
The team make the short trip to Rufforth next Sunday and any support on the sidelines is always appreciated.
Wetherby 2 are dangerously near the relegation trap door and were in need of points when they travelled to Rufforth this morning.
The return of star pairing Mike and Olli Parks was welcome news however and they managed a win and two draws on their reappearance including a convincing 9-3 win in their sole success. They accrued 21 points overall.
Mike Connolly and Marc Bickers, who had been in the successful York 2 mixed team midweek win at David Lloyd, teamed up here and the duo came away with two important wins and a narrow 7-5 loss to claim 20 points in the session.
However third pair Luke Green and Josh Bayliss were to prove the men of the match as they produced some unexpected but wonderful tennis to record three wins and gain an incredible 27 points on the day. Two 10-2 wins and an impressive 7-5 success over the home pair first seeds was real head turning stuff and must have left their hosts scratching their heads. Bayliss is blossoming into a tremendous prospect and looks a real asset to the Wetherby club. Green, looking more relaxed than usual, was a perfect foil for his partner and the big hitting pair literally blew their opponents off court with pace, power and precision.
So a much needed 10-2 win by 68-40 lifts the team away from the drop zone and gives them vital breathing space in their fight to avoid relegation.
A great team effort so well done to all involved and I am sure captain Park will certainly not mind been over shadowed today.
Next week the chaps are back on home soil when they entertain bottom side Sheriff Hutton in another must win encounter so we wish them well there.
