On a muggy but dry evening the Harrogate One mixed first team hosted Starbeck at Castlegarth.
The team were still buzzing following the terrific result over Academy A last week and hoped to build on that with another victory tonight.
Rachel Hill, fresh from a successful outing with the York mixed first on Tuesday, once again teamed up with Josh Bayliss with the pair hoping to reproduce their man of the match performance last time out.
They played out an entertaining and hard fought draw with Starbeck number one seeds Richard Noland and Katie Draper before securing important wins over the other two visiting pairs including a comprehensive 6-0,6-2 win over Tom Hendry and Jo Douglas.
Captain Sue Jacklin teamed up with Marc Bickers who was still feeling the effects of a nasty neck injury picked up whilst playing for the men’s second team at the weekend. They were not at their best and despite a valiant effort were unable to trouble the judge despite a couple of narrow 4-6 reversals.
Nigel Williams and Lucy Wright had the look of a strong third couple however and Wright, who had been part of the top scoring couple for York 2 on Tuesday, was able to maintain that fine form here as well.
The silky skills of Williams and the never say die attitude of Wright ensured the duo produced two wins and a draw including the prized scalp of Noland and Draper whom they defeated 6-3.
The match always looked destined to go down to the wire as it ebbed one way then the other. With the watching crowd on the edge of their seats it was once again left to Baylis and Hill to see Wetherby home. Josh Bayliss held his nerve to serve out the contest to secure a 6-3 win over Christopher and Christine Noddings and for a second consecutive week a narrow 5-4 win went in favour of the hosts.
The result lifts Wetherby into joint third place pending other weekly results but crucially the team have games in hand over the promotion rivals around them. Next week they face the acid test though when they travel to champions elect Boroughbridge who are top of the table with a one hundred percent record from their opening seven fixtures including a 6-3 win at Wetherby earlier in the campaign.
The leaders have not really been troubled this season and have won many games with ease so this promises to be a very difficult evening next Monday for Wetherby.
However well done again tonight and enjoy the success ahead of that daunting trip North!
