The Leeds Ladies third team have sat idle since beating Almscliffe three weeks ago. Tonight they played host to Alwoodley looking to cement their position as league leaders.
With Captain Bev Lyn absent, veteran Ann Jones took over the reins and Helen Robinson was drafted in from the York League.
Jones and Robinson paired up and the guile of Jones and the power of Robinson proved far too good for Alwoodley seed one Ruth Kitson and Debbie Dove. The Wetherby couple won comfortably 6-1,6-2 without ever having to come out of first gear.
Robinson was loving the drop in class and her powerful baseline game was unplayable. Jones too revelled in the extra time and space afforded to her playing with such a strong partner and the duo continued their impressive form in beating Sally Harris and Elizabeth Bottone 6-2,6-1.
So a maximum four points meant Anne Lillywhite and Katie Barrett required just one set for overall victory. They were in no mood to surrender and the powerful left hand baseline play of Lillywhite coupled with the net dominance of Barrett soon had the visitors in a spin. They polished off Bottone and Harris 6-1,6-0 before a 6-3,6-3 victory over Kitson and Dove ensured the whitewash and a 8-0 home win.
So the bandwagon continues and Wetherby have their eyes firmly on promotion. They have opened up a five point lead at the summit and are the bookies favourites for the title. However as the recent Brexit election showed when Remain was 1/12 favourite as the polls closed, the Bookies don’t always call it right!!!!
Well done to the girls for such a clinical performance this evening. The team are back in action next Tuesday for the local derby fixture away at bottom side Collingham when they look to continue that title charge.
Tonights winning team from left to right was – Katie Barrett, Anne Lillywhite, Helen Robinson and captain Ann Jones.
