The York One ladies team are on the promotion trail this term and are currently second chasing down the leaders Fulford. This afternoon they hosted Pocklington who are struggling towards the bottom of the Fulford Ladies Invitation League Division Two.
Despite warm and pleasant conditions there was thunder and rain expected later so the team knew a good start and a quick finish was essential.
Rachel Hill and Yvonne Mannall teamed up as usual. Hill has been in fantastic form this season and is arguably this weeks player of the week for the club sides. On Tuesday she picked up 26 points in helping the York One mixed team win and Thursday saw her part of the winning Harrogate mixed first team too so she was going for the hat trick today.
Captain Mannall is a powerful and consistent player and alongside woman of the moment Hill they proved far too good for the three visiting pairs in claiming an impressive 29 points and only conceding a mere 7.
Angela Crossley and Jo Coverdale have been regulars on the circuit a while and the two teamed up here. Crossley, now back from honeymoon and Coverdale, also back from a two week break were on fire with batteries fully recharged. They too completed a hat trick of wins and secured 27 points towards the team total.
Lucy Wright, who has also had a busy week with three team fixtures was paired with Dawn Steel who is usually part of Ian Teasdale’s Harrogate Two mixed squad. The couple were able to play with the freedom of knowing the other pairs were well on top and secured a vital further 18 points from a win, a narrow loss and a draw. All three rubbers were well contested and they enjoyed their afternoon tennis.
Wetherby ultimately ran out comfortable winners by 74-34 to maintain the pressure at the top and complete the double over Pockington this season. Their only defeat was against the leaders Fulford in a narrow 52-56 home defeat recently and they remain extremely well placed for a promotion assault.
Next Saturday the team have a morning fixture away at Rufforth when they hope to complete another double against an outfit who are currently just behind them in the table.
Well done today and good luck with the promotion push.
