Promotion Charge Back On Track

The Wetherby mixed first team were in action this evening when on a rare recent sun filled night they hosted Rowntree Park at Castlegarth.

Despite a defeat last time out when absence meant they fielded a weakened team, they are still sitting well placed in third position and harbour strong promotion aspirations.

Tonight they were able to pick from relative strength against the struggling visitors as they looked to consolidate that position.

Chairman Steve Jones was captain for the night with Angela Crossley still convalescing at home following surgery, and he teamed up with the first team ladies captain Yvonne Mannall . This had the makings of a dream partnership and so it proved as the duo turned on the style with some impressive doubles play. They easily accounted for Parks number one pair Ian Macauley and Sandra Pauw 11-1, despite the fact that pair are ranked sixth in the overall league rankings for best couples. Two further 8-4 wins meant a clean sweep for the Wetherby couple and a total points tally of 27 ensured Rowntree were always playing catch up.

Jeremy Reddish partnered Charlotte Todd. The pair did struggle against Macauley and Pauw but will have been very pleased to have picked up a useful 16 points despite two defeats after beating Martin Pinfold and Kate Dance 8-4 in a crucial match.

James Landau is a tough cookie and he is enjoying a successful year with the all-conquering men’s first team. He teamed up with the poker faced Jo Coverdale and the duo were involved in some exciting rubbers. It was very much honours even as they finished with a win, a draw and a loss to acquire an important 16 points as well.

So at the conclusion Wetherby ran out worthy winners by 59-49 to ensure the promotion push stays firmley on course. Leaders Heworth don’t look to be stopping at the summit and it would appear the rest are playing for the second promotion spot. Wetherby are one of four clubs with realistic claims but know every game is like a cup final from now on. They travel to York 3 a week today hoping for further success against another team with a losing record so will go as favourites.

Well done to all concerned this evening and good luck with what is promising to be a very exciting second half to their campaign.
