On a glorious summers day morning, Brian Thomas and Mike Triffitt played Bob Kirby and Stewart Robinson in the first round of the men’s doubles club competition. This looked a fascinating battle on paper with Robinson and Triffitt well matched on league form in their respective mixed doubles teams and likewise Kirby and Thomas on social tennis form.
Thomas opened the batting and served a strong first game which he was to continue in the main throughout the contest. He and Triffitt played some impressive tennis in the first set and led from start to finish to run out winners by 6 games to 3.Thomas was the pick of the servers and stayed calm in producing some splendid tennis whilst Triffitt was consistent in forcing his opponents into unforced errors.
Robinson, who can be a slow starter, was in no mood to surrender however and alongside the veteran Kirby the duo began to force the pace and upped their game significantly. They raced into a 4-0 second set lead leaving a bewildered Thomas and Triffitt watching in appreciation. The set then become tighter with the first set victors clawing their way back into contention at 5-5 having trailed 5-2. However Kirby and Robinson showed no signs of nerves and regrouped and composed themselves to win the next two rubbers for a 7-5 success to level the match at one set all.Robinson has a splendid back hand which crucially tends to come back fast and just over the net and Kirby used his height to dominate at the net so the pair were worthy winners in set two.
A good start was essential in the decider and Triffitt and Thomas took the bull by the horns and raced into a quick 3-0 lead on the back of some impressive percentage tennis. Robinson, who had played the previous evening for the York 2 mixed team ,and Kirby who was playing well above his years were showing signs of fatigue and despite winning the next Thomas and Triffitt upped the tempo and began to force more errors. They finished full of running to complete a 6-1 win and a 2-1 match result to progress to round two where they await the winners of Peter Baldwin and Walter Skubiak or Paul Hill and Guy Wood.
This was a tremendous match played in a fine spirit in near perfect conditions and all competitors thoroughly enjoyed their morning.
Commiserations to the losers and good luck to the winners for the rest of the competition.
