The Ladies first team have been battling for promotion from Division Two all season but absence has cost them dearly in two consecutive defeats against Rufforth and Boston Spa recently. Amazingly they were by the identical score line of 75-33 but those setbacks are threatening to derail their season.
Luckily they welcomed back key personnel this weekend when they travelled to Wiggington on Friday. Only three points separated the pair at start of play with Wetherby still holding the advantage.
Captain Yvonne Mannall paired up with Helen Robinson who made a welcome return following a holiday in Portugal. The pair are both hard hitting baseliners but with Mannall also a very strong net competitor they looked a perfect match on paper. They also are above average on court as well and the duo were in irresistible form as they combined to secure an impressive 23 points from three victories.
Sue Jacklin and Rachel Hill partnered together and they too were in terrific form. Two wins and a draw for 22 points was a superb effort and meant Wetherby were in the driving seat with victory in sight.
Jo Coverdale and Charlotte Todd made up the team and knew 10 points would be enough to secure the most crucial of victories. However Todd is still struggling with injury and was unable to produce her normal high standard of play. They lost two rubbers and played Eleanor Bradshaw and Lorraine Oadby who had been the home team’s best performers. But in a real backs to the wall effort they produced arguably the performance of the night to amazingly pull off a shock 4-8 win which allowed them to accumulate 13 points and see Wetherby prevail by 50 games to 58.
So Wetherby remain in second place and open a five point lead over Wiggington who look outsiders in the race to finish in the two promotion places. Fulford are looking like title winners with a five point cushion over Wetherby but the top two meet in a crunch tie in York next Sunday. Their first meeting saw Fulford prevail by the smallest of margins winning 56-52 so this has all the makings of the game of the season. With three games remaining two victories would secure promotion and Wetherby also face Boston Spa and Dunnington who both have losing records.
Providing Wetherby can pick from strength they are favourites to maintain that promotion spot but victory at the leaders next week would certainly make that task all the more easier of course.
Well done for this great win and good luck with the last three matches and the quest to be playing in the top section next term.
