York One Mixed Keep Hopes Alive

The York mixed first team had given themselves a chance for promotion when beating York 3 away last time we checked in with them but realistically needed to win all their remaining fixtures. They unfortunatley just got touched off 51-57 at home against champions Heworth the match after and travelled to fellow promotion hopefuls Bubwith last night still needing the gods to shine upon them.

They still found themselves in the chasing pack playing for the second promotion spot as did the hosts with both clubs tied on 12 points each. So this was always going to be the preverbial 4 pointer with the losers more than likely eliminated from the promotion race.

Wetherby sent a strong team with Steve Jones partnering Charlotte Todd. This cool couple have great mental strength and a calm playing style and finished the night with an excellent 20 points after two wins and a narrow loss to give the team a good winning opportunity.

Youngster Joe Cawcutt was once again called upon and he played alongside Ladies first team captain Yvonne Mannall who was last seen celebrating a winning short tennis doubles victory at the Open day last Sunday!!.Cawcutt was sporting a new short hair style and he was electric on court too. This duo complement each other well and found an instant partnership. They completed their evening unbeaten and in the process collected 23 points from two wins and a draw against home number one duo Liz Bramley and Doug Smith.

Regular partners James Landau and Jo Coverdale completed the line up and as always were fighting tooth and nail for every point available. They managed two victories and a loss against the useful Bramley and Smith to score a crucial 20 points too.

Ultimately Wetherby ran out surprisingly comfortable winners on the night 45-63 to keep the promotion dream alive and virtually extinguish Bubwiths. For the hosts Bramley and Smith won all three rubbers and collected 21 points but their colleagues were not strong enough in the face of a big Wetherby team performance and could have no complaints with the final score line. The loss of strongest pair Jon Longthorpe and Jill Rounce certainly did not help Bubwith and with this pair present the game would undoubtedly have been far closer.

Wetherby move into second place as a consequence of this win with two games left to play. Unfortunately Dunnington in third place also won and like Wetherby are on 14 points but with a game in hand which makes them favourites for that second promotion berth. However there is good news and a strong chance of some more twists and turns during the run in. Dunnington still have to travel to runaway leaders Heworth and visit Castlegarth to play Wetherby so promotion is still very much in Wetherby’s hands. Before that Wetherby host Poppleton next week, although they will be without Mannall who is away in Croatia. Hopefully the team can cover her undoubted loss and it would be brilliant if the last game of the season with Dunnington turns out to be a winner takes promotion clash.

Well done again for a professional performance and good luck with those last two hugh fixtures.
