From left to right – Debbie Vines, Rachel Butterworth, Janine Smith and Louise Williams trying out some new tennis shots!
The ladies second team were in high spirits as they left for their final game of the season away at Appleton Roebuck this afternoon. Swopping tennis racquets for marrows, which were kindly donated from the allotment growers, the girls were having great fun.
Wetherby were still in the promotion hunt but knew they needed second placed Copmanthorpe to slip up away at Knaresborough. There was a sense of inevitability that they wouldn’t and the team left knowing they could perhaps play without the pressure of recent games.
Roebuck have been relegated after a disappointing season and Wetherby arrived with a strong looking team. With Fiona Chantrey injured and Marise Richfield unavailable there were two changes from the side that had lost to Copmanthorpe.
Emma Abel joined her mum Jill and the duo were in sparkling form. They won all three rubbers including two by 2-10 score lines to post a cracking 28 points on the afternoon. This set the visitors well on their way to victory.
Captain Rachel Butterworth paired with Debbie Vines and this experienced couple were also unbeaten. They won two and drew one to add a further 20 points to the ever growing Wetherby haul.
Janine Smith once again stepped off the subs bench to assist and must surely be in the running for reserve of the season. She partnered Louise Williams and the pair also left their mark accumulating another 17 points. Williams did well to continue after suffering a nasty bee sting but in true battling style soldiered on to ensure the visitors ran out comfortable winners 43-65.
We still await news from Knaresborough v Copmanthorpe so at present Wetherby go second albeit only for a brief while perhaps.
Well done to the ladies today and during the season. They have produced some wonderful and exciting tennis and even if just pipped for promotion have entertained throughout.
