Another great turnout for the second of our Sunday social tennis tournaments with 22 entrants today. A cold but fine day with occasional sunshine ensured good playing conditions and it was nice to see so much pink and red on show for this early Valentines event.
Both the Ladies and Mens titles were once again keenly fought and there was several change of leaders as the scores were collected at the end. Five rounds of mixed doubles were played with only the top four highest rounds counting towards a players final total to allow for those that had only completed in four rounds.
After some good tennis and competitive play, Mike Richards followed up his January win by just holding off Mike Butterworth by a solitary point with 21 points to reclaim his men’s title.
Jill Abel, who was in the running for the best dressed award, managed to just pip Rachel Butterworth to the ladies title with an impressive final points haul of 24 to take the ladies crown.
The best dressed went to someone making his photo debut for the website with men’s second team player Steve Crossley rewarded with a bottle of red wine for his lovely pink jumper he dared to wear, well done Steve!.
The bottle of white wine for the worst dressed went to a player who provides plenty of entertainment both on and off the court. Roger Grigg dressed in all black and wearing a pair of shorts over his tracksuit bottoms looked a site for sore eyes but a worthy winner of worst dressed which he accepted in good grace, well done Rodger who was delighted with his win, wine and a final total of 10 points too!
Angie Bell once again did a fantastic job organising the order of play and allocation of partners. She was ably assisted by Janine Smith who thoroughly enjoyed her time keeper role as well as blowing the famous whistle. The power was certainly going to her head this afternoon!!!
Always a great sight to see our courts packed and plenty of colour on show. Helen Robinson produced an ace from this wonderful serve whilst playing partner Mike Butterworth was seen leaping like a salmon to produce a fantastic smash at the net as coach Paul Archer can only watch in awe!. Greg Vince, as ever was difficult to pass, and seen here returning another shot in his red shorts, the only pair seen and very brave to wear on a chilly day!
David Rhodes was full of concentration sporting a lovely red jumper and produced many excellent shots during the afternoon.Judith Crossley donned her red top with pride and produced a deft touch at the net as the ball is seen going for a winner whilst Mike Richards also served well on his way to the title as seen above.
Great coverage; sorry to miss it
