Defending champions Rufforth opened this seasons title defence with an exciting 43-29 success over Boroughbridge played in good conditions on a mild evening. Both teams fielded very strong quartets with James Edmond and Sue Yoward of Rufforth finishing as the top scoring pair in the York mixed league Divison two last season which saw them promoted to the top flight. Ed Zeigler and Kate Lewis were also part of that successful Rufforth team and were in action tonight too.
For Boroughbridge new captain Charlie Grasby was inspirational in helping Boroughbridge A to runners up in Harrogate mixed Division two which also saw them promoted to the top section and fellow team members Chantal Lancaster, Jamie Jarman and Helen Ball also played important roles.
Therefore the standard was top class tonight which resulted in some excellent and competitive tennis and a number of close and edge of the seat battles. Rufforth ultimately proved too strong to run out 43-29 winners but well done to both teams for a fantastic match and setting the benchmark high for the other sides!
Wetherby 1 play Knaresborough on Thursday whilst Rufforth are next in action on October 24 against Knaresborough and Boroughbridge play Wetherby 1 October 26.
