Mix In Tournament With Boston Spa Provides Great Entertainment

The annual Mix In Tournament with Boston Spa took place this afternoon in what turned out to be excellent conditions with warm weather and no wind. A gathering of almost thirty competitors ensured a competitive event and also that organisers Steve Jones and Debbie Vines would be kept busy with a challenging schedule.

Competitors were asked to play a number of doubles games over three or four rounds with the top three scores counting towards their final total. After some tremendous tennis and keenly fought battles Fiona Chantrey was crowed top female with the ladies second team captain producing some classic tennis on her way to the title.

The men’s event proved extremely close with four players tied on fifteen points meaning a playoff was needed to determine the winners. Collingham Winter League captain Tony Cutler teamed up with Wetherby U14 captain Bradley Triffitt and they took on Harrogate A mixed doubles member Walter Skubiak and regular social player Roger Grigg. In this one game winner takes all, Grigg was chosen to serve and he quickly opened up a 30-0 lead. However youngster Triffitt fought back well during the next point with some excellent baseline returns before partner Cutler appeared from nowhere to smash an excellent shot away for a tidy winner. A netted return from Grigg made it 30-30 before Triffitt played a delightful drop shot to go 30-40 ahead. With the crowd on a knife edge Tony Cutler was left to play an exquisite back hand winner to take the match and he and Triffitt celebrated joyfully on court as joint male winners.

Roger Grigg, Walter Skubiak, Bradley Triffitt and Tony Cutler lined up before the playoff with Triffitt and Cutler taking the spoils.

After passing on his wine winnings to a delighted Dad, Bradley took ownership of his prize!!

A big thanks to Steve Jones and Debbie Vines who organised today with consummate ease.
