Wetherby B Maintain Promotion Push

Wetherby B were in action at a sun drenched Castlegarth this evening as they entertained Harrogate Spa A. Before play Spa announced the good news that they had surprisingly triumphed at leaders Harlow on Friday which was great news for the hosts. Even better was that Spa were missing some of their big guns that had played that night too!. Chairman and captain Steve Reffitt was still able to field a competitive outfit which included Ian Charters who had scored 19 during the morning for the Spa men’s 2nd team in their big win at Wheldrake.

Wetherby made two changes from the side that had won on Thursday at West Tanfield with Rachel Butterworth replacing Anne Lillywhite who was on holiday whilst Ann Jones stepped in for the absent Judith Crossley.

Bradley Triffitt had also been in men’s action over the weekend and was playing his third match in two days. However he looked fit and ready for action and he and Rachel formed a strong looking duo at seed one. They soon began to show their class against Steve and Pam Dight with both hitting well from deep and taking any opportunity at the net. The Wetherby couple were very consistent punishing any errors and ran out comfortable 11-1 winners. Tony and Katie continued their fine season as they had too much firepower for Margaret Jackson and Chris Norman. Once more consistency was key as Wetherby took the rubber 10-2. Lindsay Edgar and Ann Jones found themselves 1-4 down early against Sarah Bates and Ian but battled back well to narrowly lose 5-7 which meant the hosts had opened up a 26-10 advantage.

Tony and Katie maintained that strong start as they showed no mercy on court one dispatching Steve and Pam 9-3 whilst Brad and Rachel were ultra clinical as they produced some wonderful tennis to take the scalp of Sarah and Ian 11-1. Lindsay and Ann added another useful 5 in a 5-7 loss which extended the Wetherby lead to 51-21.

With an exciting men’s final taking place at Wimbledon all the players took opportunities to catch the action in the clubhouse whilst the watching Mike Triffitt gave regular score updates when the players were back on court!

Brad and Rachel had their toughest challenge in the last where Chris Norman was hitting some terrific shots with real power and testing the hosts top dogs. With Margaret crafty and difficult to pass this was a close affair but thankfully the Wetherby duo took it all in their stride and weathering the early storm proved too strong for a 9-3 success. This meant they accumulated 31 on the evening which was an excellent return . Tony and Katie were also involved in a titanic battle on court three where Ian and Sarah were playing some eye catching tennis. The hosts second seeds couldn’t break down the visitors and with Ian very difficult to beat the Spa duo were deserved 4-8 winners leaving Tony and Katie to add 23 to the teams total. Lindsay and Ann couldn’t quite break their duck on court one but were consistent throughout the evening with another narrow 5-7 reverse. 15 points from the third seeds was still most welcome and resulted in a final winning score line of 69-39.

Another good performance takes the team joint top with Harlow and four points clear of third placed Thirsk C. They face bottom side Bedale at home next Sunday before a huge clash at Thirsk on August 1st which may very well decide their promotion fate. A big thanks to Rachel Butterworth for stepping in and providing great quality and company both on court and later in bar 3!

A beaming Bradley Triffitt, Ann Jones, Rachel Butterworth, Lindsay Edgar, Tony Cutler and Katie Barrett really enjoyed their evening in the sun playing some lovely tennis during a 69-39 success over Harrogate Spa.
