Wetherby A maintained their impressive title winning season in Division Five as they defeated David Lloyd at Castlegarth this evening. With top pair Richard Franks and Fiona Chantrey resting, Mike Triffitt and Louise Beasley stepped in to fill their shoes at seed one and they didn’t disappoint. They opened up with an eye catching 10-2 success over Kield Rasmussen and Karen Dixon with Triffitt ultra consistent whilst Beasley once again was in stunning form at the net as she totally dominated. This laid the foundations and they followed up with a cosy 8-4 victory over the visiting third pair Chris Nixon and Anthea Davis. These two are very crafty and clever and the Wetherby top dogs had to come from 2-3 behind to grind out their win. They finished off with a narrow 7-5 success over Alan Cunningham and Juliet Jones with both pairs producing some excellent tennis. This gave them 25 overall which was a nice way to end their final game of the campaign together.
Captain Barry Johnson teamed up with Dawn Steel at seed two and they managed to add another 17 to the hosts score. They fought bravely in the opener to force a useful 6-6 draw against Alan and Juiliet but struggled against the visiting top seeds losing 4-8. However they finished strongly with a narrow 7-5 win over Chris and Anthea where the pair had to dig deep but with Barry bossing the net and Dawn playing well from deep they were worthy winners.
Kevin Duckenfield and Christina Plant provide the power for the team and were in good form. After a frustrating 6-6 draw with Chris and Anthea they produced arguably the performance of the night to beat the highly rated Cunningham and Jones 10-2 in a master class display. Finishing with a narrow 7-5 success against Kield and Karen meant 23 was their total which helped the team to a final winning margin of 65-43.
With promotion and the title secured, Wetherby must beat fellow promoted outfit and runners up Thirsk at Castlegarth next Thursday to secure the perfect season with 14 wins.

Further north Tony Cutler took his Wetherby B team to play Thirsk looking for the point that would see them gain promotion from Division 6. They travelled in strength and were confident of victory. Bradley Triffitt and Anne Lillywhite have enjoyed a tremendous debut season together and made a cracking start as they beat David Wood and Dorothy Prince 1-11. They struggled against John Hallett and Francesca Addison in the next and were happy enough to take a 6-6 draw before back to form they proved too strong for David Titchmarsh and Christine Ward who they dispatched 3-9. Strong teamwork and understanding saw the duo accumulate 26.
Tony Cutler was once again on court with regular partner Katie Barrett and they too added 26 to the visitors winning total. They began with a 4-8 success over the impressive Hallett and Addison before turning up the tempo to crush Titchmarsh and Ward 1-11. With Tony bamboozling the hosts with his wonderful spin and Katie strong at the net they rounded off with narrow 5-7 win over David and Dorothy .
Lindsay Edgar and Judith Crossley were also in good form and they were involved in three very tight rubbers. They began with a 6-6 draw against David and Christine before a narrow reverse against David and Dorothy. They finished on a high with a 5-7 win over John and Fran which meant 18 more points for Wetherby and a final winning margin of 38-70 was enough to celebrate Division Five tennis for the team next year.
A big well done and congratulations all round. Captain Tony Cutler has installed a positive attitude into a happy and winning camp this season. With youth and experience they have only lost once and now face Almscliffe at home Sunday looking to move four points clear of Harlow at the summit. The Harrogate based outfit will then need to win their final two games to deny Wetherby the title on points difference but promotion has been great and a welcome surprise indeed.
