Fine early evening weather greeted the players on Sunday for the final game of the season for Wetherby B. Already guaranteed promotion they were looking to extend their lead at the summit to four points. Thankfully they did but with ferocious rain forcing the final round to be abandoned it proved a very close thing indeed. Lindsay Edgar and Ann Jones were at seed three but faced two tough rounds. Both were battling away and as always giving everything but they couldn’t prevent a couple of 2-10 reverses. However those four points were ultimatley the winning margin so they proved very useful contributions. Tony Cuter and Katie Barrett were once again competing at seed two and they were made to work very hard by a strong Almscliffe side. Rod and Barbara Macauley are one of the stronger pairs in the section and if Rod had not missed half of the season through injury the visitors would have certainly been challenging for promotion themselves. The Almscliffe duo proved just too strong and secured a narrow 5-7 success. Tony and Katie were then involved in another exciting match on court one and just managed to run out 7-5 winners over the energetic Simon Bryant and Phoebe Tomlinson. Phoebe caught the eye with some hard hitting and lovely serving throughout and is a player to watch for sure next season. So with Tony and Katie bagging 12 it was going to be left to the top seeds Bradley Triffitt and Anne Lillywhite to bring home the two points. They were both in very good form and with Bradley enjoying the use of a demo racket from Angela and hitting some fantastic forehands the couple were thriving . Despite some end to end rallies they proved too strong for Simon and Phoebe during a 11-1 opening success. They then followed this up with some more stylish doubles play and with Anne hitting so many pacey forehands and Brad dominating the net, they once again ran out impressive 11-1 winners over Dave Corkill and Susan Gosling to finish with a superb 22 points.
With round three abandoned after thunder, lighting and heavy rain hit Castlegarth it was the hosts who triumphed 38-34 winners to indeed move four points clear at the summit with Harlow now needing to win both their remaining matches to take the title.
Captain Tony Cutler has thoroughly enjoyed his debut season at the helm and the team spirit in the camp has been amazing with great contributions throughout. Katie had a fantastic season alongside Tony and they finished joint third in the overall divisional player stats. Anne Lillywhite was a very consistent performer and lined up ten times, all with Bradley Triffitt, as she secured the runners up booth. However, without showing bias, pride of place has to go to the fifteen year old youngster who didn’t miss a game and played all twelves matches in his debut season. He only dropped three rubbers all season and in amassing an eye catching 307 games was the best player in the whole division. It has been a pleasure following the team this season, I only missed one match myself, and seeing so many happy faces during their promotion campaign. Well played everyone who contributed and good luck in Division Five next year!
A memorable season for the team who took time out to celebrate afterwards in Bar 3 this evening. Well played Lindsay Edgar, Ann Jones, Bradley Triffitt, Tony Cutler, Katie Barrett and of course the relaxing Anne Lillywhite!
Thanks to the ‘Lucky 13’ who represented Wetherby B and helped them to promotion this season.
Nice to see Wetherby players sitting in the top four positions in the overall player stats section in Division Six this season.
