Once again the weather was threatening the Winter League match this evening at Castlegarth but despite losing the final round to the elements Wetherby 1 and Knaresborough 2 were able to complete two rounds and thankfully produce a result. Helen Robinson and Adam Turner played crucial roles in helping Wetherby take the Winter league crown last year and they were back again forming a strong seed one pairing. Jill and Mike Abel enjoyed a good summer playing in York mixed division four and they paired at seed two.
Knaresborough arrived with regular Winter league campaigner Tony Graham captaining the team and he was joined by exciting junior player Ellie Wilson. Andy Little, who had guided the Knaresborough men’s second team to runners up and promotion in their debut season in the York men’s league division 8, was at seed two with Maggie Sakunda who has been a regular for the Boro ladies team this summer.
Robinson and Turner were able to show their first team quality as they started powerfully and strong against Graham and Wilson. There was plenty of hard hitting and eye catching tennis from the quartet but the hosts had a touch of class that proved decisive as they ran out cosy 9-3 winners. Jill and Mike can always be relied upon to give maximum effort and covering every inch of the court were battling away proving difficult opposition. Andy was hitting hard and accurately for the visitors whilst some crafty play from Maggie ensured they were not throwing the towel in. However Mike has also played a lot of tennis for the Wetherby men’s second team in division four and it showed as he produced some quality tennis. With excellent understanding the Abels took the rubber 10-2.
Helen and Jill were also in majestic form in the ladies rubber with some tremendous finishing. Ellie and Maggie were enjoying the challenge of playing higher rated opponents and produced plenty of wonderful moments but the consistency of the Wetherby girls proved too much as the hosts ran out deserved 10-2 victors.
The men’s rubber was all blood and thunder with the balls taking a real hammering from plenty of ferocious hitting from the quartet. Turner is a accurate left hander and showed why he is one of the leading men at the club with some impressive tennis. Mike was also in fine form and the duo just held the advantage. Tony and Andy gave all in a narrow 8-4 defeat and showed why they too are leading players for the Knaresborough club with some excellent play of their own. A great contest and credit to all on show.
With the rain making conditions difficult the third round was omitted but with Wetherby ahead 37-11 there was no doubt where the two match points would be heading.
A big thanks to all again this evening for ensuring the match went ahead and we look forward to seeing many of you back on court this winter.
Thanks to Mike and Jill Abel, Adam Turner and Helen Robinson for tonights win and they are joined by Steve Plant who played an influential role helping Wetherby 1 take the Winter League crown last year which Adam proudly holds.
A brave effort from Tony, Ellie, Maggie and Andy who played with a smile throughout and enjoyed their evening.
