Ladies Doubles Cup Event

The ladies doubles final took place this afternoon, Monday September 7th, with Yvonne Mannall and Rachel Hill taking on Angela Crossley and Emma Youlden. Angela and Emma had needed three sets on each occasion to win Group 2 whilst Rachel and Yvonne had been involved in a tough semi-final which also required three sets showing the strength of the ladies competition this summer.

The weather was overcast but dry as play commenced and this final promised to be very tight and competitive. The four are good friends off court but there was no quarter given on it as this battle was producing some terrific tennis and many hard fought winners. Angela was serving well and with a great backhand creating some lovely angels as well as some excellent defensive work. Emma is a relative newcomer and was catching the eye with her court coverage and big hitting from deep. There are few who hit as hard as Yvonne however and Rachels smart net play is well renowned too. Little between the pairs but the underdogs took the opener after a narrow 6-4 success as they threatened an upset. Yvonne began to pile the power on in the second however as she began to exploit the gaps and put Youlden and Crossley under pressure. With Rachel patrolling the net the pair showed why they are so lethal and levelled up matters following a 6-3 success.

Light drizzle was starting to fall as the final set began and conditions would prove more difficult. Emma and Angela continued to battle manfully and were certainly not waving the white flag. However Yvonne and Rachel used their wealth of experience to produce some clever and intelligent tennis as they started to take control. They punished any loose return and were extremely clinical. Showing no mercy they rattled off a 6-1 final set success to claim the title.

An exciting final indeed with some brilliant tennis to entertain the watching crowd. Thanks to everyone who helped make the ladies event such an exciting competition this season.

Congratulations to Yvonne and Rachel who ran out worthy winners after a tough clash picking up the shield along with their M & S biscuits.

A brilliant effort from Angela and Emma who did amazing to reach the final and made the favourites pull out all the stops to finally defeat them. Consolation M & S biscuits for them to enjoy!

Some good babysitting work from junior Bradley Triffitt kept young Charlotte happy whilst mum Angela was battling away on the show court!

Each pair will have two group games with the winner of each section advancing to the Semi Final along with the best placed runner up in all three groups. The winners of each Semi Final advance to the Final. If there is a tie at the top of a group, the winner will be determined on head to head record. If still unresolved the pair needing the least number of individual games will advance (for example a pair winning in two sets would beat a pair winning in three sets etc)  Each match is best of three sets with a championship tie break to ten played as set three. If players want to play a full final set that is fine if both agree and time allows.

If players can arrange their group matches themselves starting from week commencing June 22nd and text me the scores I will update the tables thanks. I will forward each player a list of their opponents contact details. Any questions contact Mike Triffitt on 07508 057744
