Club Finals day proved a great success today and we were blessed with some amazingly hot weather too. The day kicked off with three junior finals and it was great to see the enthusiasm shown by our younger members.
Gabe Mead has been a long term member at the club and has competed in many junior events as well as breaking into the adult teams this season too. He is a top lad and quality player and he proved too strong for George Brown in the boys U18 final. All credit to Brown however who is also improving and is a big hitting left hander who is a good prospect.
The Boys U14 final was played earlier in the week and Jack Medcalf defeated Sam Duffy.
Gabe Mead was quickly back on court as he paired with Jonny Tyler in the men’s doubles where they took on Chris Iles and Jeremy Reddish. Gabe had already played football before the tennis but was showing no signs of fatigue. The big hitting left hander continues to impress and has formed a good partnership with men’s second team star Jonny Tyler. Chris is a new member and his steady and very consistent approach proved an excellent foil to the big serving and strong play from men’s first team man Jeremy Reddish. This proved a really exciting match for a good sized crowd with a championship tie break needed to separate the pairs. Finally in a lung busting encounter Chris and Jeremy ran out narrow winners 7-5,3-6,12-10!
Yvonne Mannall teamed up with debutant Suzanne Harte and they took on Debbie Vines and Katie Barrett in the final of the Ladies doubles. Yvonne is one of the clubs strongest females and she showed her class in this battle. With Debbie and Katie proving tough opposition however the favourites had to work hard to secure victory but ran out winners 6-0,6-3.
The crowd was building nicely in eager anticipation of the men’s singles final with long term defending champion Jamie Perkins taking on newcomer Louis Glaves. Louis has been a welcome addition to the coaching team and captains Cumbria at county level so is a very useful player. The duo provided some incredible tennis on the show court which left the crowd gasping in awe at the many brilliant rallies and clinical finishing. Plenty of aces and eye catching net play but despite a number of deuces it was Louis who took the crown with a 6-1, 6-1 success.
A brilliant performance from Louis who took the mens singles title.
Nothing lost in defeat for Jame Perkins who gave everything today in ensuring we had a brilliant match to watch.
The crowd enjoyed both the tennis and weather as many topped up their tans!
Close friends Katie Barrett and Rachel Woodward were the finalists in the ladies singles and they enjoyed themselves. Rachel was making her debut in the club championships and this social player certainly showed she is capable of league tennis with some lovely ground strokes. However Katie is a veteran of many competitions and used her consistency and craft to run out a 6-1, 6-4 winner.
The mixed doubles concluded the day and this looked an intriguing matchup. Adam Turner and Laura Delafield took on Chris Iles and Yvonne Mannall who were both returning to the court after celebrating success earlier. Adam was serving very well and with great court coverage was proving hard to pass. Laura is a new member and after joining Harry Fulls development squad made some useful contributions in the York mixed team and is highly rated showing plenty of promise. She was battling away with some great defending from deep and produced some lovely touches at the net. However Yvonne is so powerful and produced a number of thunderous returns whilst with Chris hardly missing at the net, they ran out narrow winners 6-2, 7-6 despite a cracking effort in a second set tie break from Adam and Laura.
Great teamwork from Chris and Yvonne secured further silverware today.
Thanks to Tournament organiser Mike Triffitt and his assistant Bradley Triffitt, who after a long day at the office, were looking forward to their Fish n Chips tonight!. A special mention too for Helen Robinson who sourced all the prizes and whose help was greatly appreciated thanks.
Also a very big thanks to all who contributed to this seasons various events. Its great to see many new faces as well as those established members and many players ensured we reached finals day with some top organising and arranging of matches throughout.
