This afternoon saw the seventeenth running of the Mark Jackson memorial tournament and thankfully the weather gods were smiling again allowing the twelve participants to enjoy three rounds of eight matches. Each player competed in a best of four games before partners were switched for another four games and this was repeated for three rounds to give each player a total of twenty four games during the session.
Dawn Steel, Helen Robinson, Fiona Chantey and Christina Plant formed a very useful and strong quartet of ladies and after a fantastic tussle only two points separated them. Dawn took runners up with twelve points, just one ahead of Christina and Helen, but Fiona Chantrey was crowned champion for a third year running after securing thirteen points.
The men’s was also well fought with Bob Kirkby taking the veterans title with an excellent ten points whilst youngsters Ollie Steel and Bradley Triffitt managed eleven and they shared the junior accolade. However Jonathan Watmough played some eye catching tennis to assemble sixteen points which gave him runners up but no one could prevent Richard Franks from regaining his men’s title with an incredible twenty one points making him the top scorer today.
