A small but select band gathered at the club last Saturday to partake and enjoy a wine tasting evening. Doug Harrison has hosted these for many years and was delighted to co host on this occasion with our very own Events manager Charlotte Todd.

The lower numbers made for a personal and riotous evening of banter initiated by copious glasses of welcome fizz as Doug and Charlotte guided everyone through a range of white and red wines, tasted “ blind “ as normal, inviting answers to the grape, country and price. A number of tricky wine quiz questions punctuated the evening proving trickier and trickier to solve as the abundant amounts of wine kicked in.

For the first time Aldi provided the bulk of the wine, the most fascinating being an English Bacchus white , a Greek Assyrito white and a Lebanese Cabernet Sauvignon red.

Half way through proceedings everyone tucked into a wonderful buffet of cheeses pate chutney and much more provided by the Artisan Cheese company in Church Street Wetherby.
The first prize was a bottle of champagne worthily won by Tim Coverdale who led from start to finish displaying his wide range of knowledge. Nick, a friend of long standing member Paul Keighley, proved a very able runner up.

Congrats to our regular quiz master supremo Tim Coverdale who proved a class above with his excellent comprehension of fermented grapes!
Not so worthy was Nigel Williams, who having amassed a mere four points, received the booby prize of a gin and tonic without the gin!

Thanks to all for supporting this wonderful evening and a big appreciation as always to the king of wines himself, Doug Harrison, for delivering in his amazing and unique way. Of course a special thanks must also go to Charlotte Todd for a brilliant debut as co host and organiser
