Wetherby 1 Pushed All The Way

Wetherby 1 put their title credentials on the line last night at Castlegarth as they hosted Wetherby 2 in the Kendall’s Winter League . Of the original quartet selected, only Adrian Lobley lined up for the first team, so a big thanks to Sue Jacklin, Mike Park and Jo Coverdale for stepping in.

A fairly dry evening with occasional light rain and warmer temperatures meant conditions were pretty good as battle commenced.

It was great to see Sue Jacklin back on court for her seasonal debut and she paired with Adrian. The two have partnered for the first team in the HDTL division 2 last summer and are always effective. Adrian is a very crafty and cunning player. With great court coverage and mental strength he is a very accomplished individual. He was happy to sustain some long rallies with second team stars Ricard Franks and Fiona Chantrey whilst Sue was proving very effective at the net with some polished winners. Richard and Fiona have been the top duo for several seasons together in the second team and their amazing teamwork and consistency means they are always a tough nut to crack. This was an enthralling affair before Wetherby 1 took the rubber 8-4.

On court two Bradley Triffitt joined with Laura Delafield for their first outing together. Laura is enjoying a rise through the ranks and continues to catch the eye. She was very impressive in the York mixed third team last season showing impressive court speed and her competitive nature is a strong attribute. They took on Mike Park and Jo Coverdale who are no strangers together and this looked a tough rubber to call. Wetherby 2 came flying out of the blocks and with Brad confident on both forehand and backhand, he and Laura were soon gelling and making the early running. They raced into a 6-1 lead but Mike is a crafty veteran and his calm and composed style would now come to the fore as he began dominating the net on the back of some strong baseline returns from Jo . The tide was starting to turn and this thriller went down to the wire before Wetherby 2 held on to secure a narrow 7-5 success leaving them 13-11 behind.

The Ladies rubber looked intriguing and didn’t disappoint as this proved very entertaining and once again extremely close. Some more tremendous, long rallies with none of the quartet throwing in the towel meant points were hard earned as this contest ebbed and flowed. Nothing much between the pairs before the greater experience from Sue and Jo proved the difference in recording a narrow 7-5 victory.

The men’s rubber was even tighter with Brad and Richard producing the form of their lives and threatening to upset Adrian and Mike. Some incredible rallies had the watching crowds gasping in appreciation and this really was a super match. Adrian stepped up at 5-6 down to show some real quality and a 6-6 tie was a fair reflection of events in this absorbing clash.

So as the finale began things were still nicely poised as the table toppers led 26-22. Mike and Jo took on Richard and Fiona on the show court and at 2-2 this promised to be another tight affair. However the Wetherby 2 duo are used to long gruelling games and were quite content to adopt their usual consistent tactics again here. They began to turn up the power and despite some fantastic down the line winners from Jo and some incredible court coverage from Mike, they couldn’t prevent a 3-9 defeat that suddenly turned the match on its head.

Needing eight points for victory Adrian and Sue knew the would have to play well to see the first team over the line but a good start from Brad and Laura made things interesting. Plenty of strong returns from both couples had their respective opponents stretching on the baseline but Wetherby 1 were beginning to dominate in the trenches and looked confident at the net. Having to defend, Brad and Laura were now under pressure but still refusing to buckle and this was a brave performance. Finally the class from Sue and Adrian allowed them to take the tie 8-4 and secure the important two points after a 37-35 thriller.

Wetherby 1 extend their winning run to six games and know the title is now within reach with matches against Rufforth 2 and Harlow to finish but Wetherby 2 gave them the fright of their lives and shows what good strength in depth there is at the club. Once again a big thanks to all the players for contributing to tonight’s exciting action .
