Collingham Defeat Harlow In Winter League

20191002_001629

The rain had been incessant during the day but thankfully a dry and calm evening allowed the Winter League clash between Collingham and Harlow to go ahead as planned tonight with river levels just below the playing surface. Harlow were making their first appearance in the competition after joining this year and in Cassius Petrovan have a man mountain of a player who had helped the men’s Harlow first team to promotion from York division 7 during the summer finishing as the clubs leading performer. He was joined by Simone Carrick who had helped Harlow B to promotion from Harrogate mixed division 6 where she was the Harrogate based teams leading scorer. Andy and Anne Gillies made up the quartet and these relative newcomers had little team experience behind them so were keenly looking forward to testing themselves.

Collingham captain Tony Cutler and Bradley Triffitt were the mainstay of the team last season and were once more in action after successful summers whilst Katie Barrett and Louse Beasley joined them after also enjoying good success in mixed tennis too during the summer season.

Brad and Louise had reached the semi final of the Wetherby tennis club mixed doubles in house competition and are forging a useful partnership. They took on Cassius and Simone and this was an excellent affair with plenty of quality on show. Little between the teams but the greater team work from Collingham was the deciding factor as they ran out 8-4 winners. On court 5 Tony and Kate resumed their successful partnership and once more their super understanding allowed them to prevail 10-2 against the Gillies who improved as the rubber progressed.

With an 18-6 advantage round 2 would be crucial but the Collingham ladies once again showed their wealth of experience to play error free tennis and despite some big hitting from Simone and great court coverage from Anne the Harlow ladies couldn’t prevent a 10-2 reverse. The men’s rubber was a thriller with all four players in superb form. Brad and Tony are often seen together and they managed to just see off the spirited Harlow men 8-4 despite some ferocious hitting from Petrovan who again impressed.

36-12 ahead meant Collingham could almost celebrate but Harlow played their best tennis of the evening during the final round. Simone and Cassius were now in top form and were really upping the tempo. They enjoyed a narrow but well deserved victory over Tony and Kaitie 5-7 in a another match played in great spirit. Brad and Louise were determined to remain unbeaten but they were pushed hard by the Gillies who eventually were narrowly beaten 8-4 leaving Collingham to celebrate 49-23. Thanks to all on show for plenty of entertainment and good luck with the rest of the season to both clubs.

Winter League Is Back!

20190924_190244Despite heavy rain throughout the day, Rufforth 2 and Knaresborough 1 defied the odds to open the 2019/2020 Winter League season at Wetherby this evening. With the forecast offering more hope for later, the teams began and despite drizzle during the second round the temperatures were warm and pleasant and the courts remained playable allowing for an exciting contest. There was little between the teams but Rufforth showed the greater consistency and with wily veteran Phil Sinton and the powerful Dan Russell both in good form they helped pave the way towards victory. Captain Philippa Page played an influential role in helping Rufforth ladies second team to title success in York Division 5 during the summer whilst Emma Whiting showed why she played in the ladies first team in Division two with some excellent eye catching tennis.

Knaresborough captain Paul White and regular Winter League competitor Tony Graham tried hard to remain competative but couldn’t produce their best whilst both Natasha Quigley and Jan Blogg went down fighting with big efforts throughout the evening.

A 45-27 success takes Rufforth to the top of the table and all the players must be congratulated for showing great bravery to ensure the season started on time thanks.

Well played Phil Sinton, Philippa Page, Emma Whiting and Dan Russell who helped Rufforth 2 to an opening night success.

Wetherby Tennis Finals Day 2019 Report

Torrential rain Sunday morning left Finals day in doubt and it was great work from the cleaning team who cleared the courts to allow play to commence at around 12-30pm. Connor and Hettie contested the Under 11 final on court three but unfortunately poor Connor was injured early and despite battling away valiantly was defeated 4-2 in the opener. The second set was 2-2 before he was forced to withdraw so congratulations Hettie for a super success.

George Brown and Elsa were on court 2 playing their Under 14 final with left hander George in cracking form in the opener which he took it 6-0. But all credit to Elsa during a terrific second set which after a titanic battle stood at 6-6 and therefore needed a tie break. George stood firm however to complete victory.

20190922_134815

On Court one Bradley Triffitt and Henry Brown entertained a good sized crowd with some high quality tennis which saw many long rallies in the Under 16 final. With the players doing well to adapt to the slippy conditions we saw some lovely finishes and after trailing 1-3 Triffitt took the opener 6-4. That was always going to be crucial and he seized the incentive and quickly kicked on during the second. Henry didn’t give up without a fight but couldn’t prevent a 6-1 loss but both players were a real credit to their section.

20190922_133259

The weather had been drizzly but started to clear as defending champion Jamie Perkins took on Tom Warburton in the men’s  singles final on the show court. These two giants of men’s tennis at the club were hitting incredibly hard and produced some breathtaking tennis during the first set which Jamie took 6-1. That was harsh on Tom but Jamie was so clinical on the crucial points. However the second set was tighter and Warburton made the favourite work extremely hard to complete a 6-3 victory drawing good applause from an appreciate crowd.

On court two Elizabeth Hewett, one of the juniors who has recently joined the club, had reached the ladies singles final in her debut season. She took on the experienced Katie Barrett who had reached the final after a  mammoth semi final win over Suzanne Harte which had lasted 3 ½ hours!. Both players were careful on the testing courts and with little between the pair Elizabeth used her court speed and harder hitting to secure a narrow 6-3 first set win. She really took control in the second and playing with great freedom showed what a promising player she is with a cosy 6-0 win to run out an impressive victor.

The Ladies doubles followed on court two with Katie Barrett back in action joined by ladies first team star Lucy Wright. They took on fellow ladies first teamer Helen Robinson and Ann Jones who is one of the longest serving members at the club and has appeared in numerous finals over the many years she has supported these championships. This turned in to a tight cat and mouse affair with some impressive hitting from deep from Wright and Robinson whilst great defending from Barrett and Jones. Lucy and Katie just carried the greater consistency and were able to secure the trophy following a 6-3,6-3 victory.

20190922_171357

On the show court Mike and Bradley Triffitt were in opposition in the men’s doubles with Mike joined by Richard Whaley and Brad by Steve Plant. This turned out to be the tightest and closest event of the afternoon with very little between the quartet. However Steve Plant showed why he is one of the leading doubles players at the club as he combined big serving with some impressive interchange of pace and was also dominating the net. With Triffitt junior hitting hard and playing very well they took the opener 6-4. It was equally as competitive in the second with Richard using some tremendous spin to produce some vital winners whilst Mike was defending for his life and producing some surprising winners of his own which drew applause from the crowd. However Steve and Brad just had the greater overall fire power and ran out narrow winners 7-5 in a great final.

With the dark clouds looking menacing the Mixed doubles final got underway around 4-45pm with Steve Plant and Katie Barrett facing Lucy Wright and Stuart Robinson. Katie was showing no effects of her third game of the day although was thankful to another majestic performance from Plant. Lucy in her second game looked full of confidence whilst the great backhand and crafty skills of Robbo were also on show. However the favourites took control and ran out 6-0 winners in the opener. Back came Lucy and Stuart and they were playing ever so well as the drizzle came down in set two. They went toe to toe making many memorable winners but trailing 5-4 they could not prevent Katie serving out to secure a 6-4 win for her and Steve.
